Ludhiana, July 8, 2017: Dr.J.S.Bal, Former Professor of Horticulture, Department of Fruit Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has been nominated as a member of Scientific Committee of IV International Juujube (Ber) Symposium under the aegis of 30th International Horticultural Congress (IHC) organised by International Society of Horticultural Science going to be held at Istanbol, Turkey from August 12-16, 2018. A ten members cmmittee has been constituted by the IHC 2018 for the conduct of IV International Jujube Symposium.

Dr.J.S.Bal has been inducted as third senior most member of this committee which includes two scientists each from China and India and one each from USA, Australia, Romania, Italy, Turkey and Kuwait. It is a great honour for Dr.Bal that he has been nominated as a member from Punjab representing India.

Dr.Bal told that main themes of the symposium subject discussion are Overview (present status, problem, advances, prospect, economy, market etc), Genetics and Breeding, Cultivation, Diseases and pests, Post-harvest treatment and processing, marketing and future prospects of jujube (ber). The specific aim of jujube symposium in series is to provide an international forum for researchers, academics, business people as well as government officials with updates and to let more people know jujube (ber) and enjoy it.

Earlier, Dr.bal represented India in 3rd International Jujube Symposium held at Brisbane (Australia) in August 2014 and delivered keynote address on "Development and production of Ber in India" in inaugural session of the symposium. In recognitions to his contributions in ber, he was invited in International Ber Symposium held at Xinzheng, Henan (China) in September 2011. There he presented his work "Holistic Ber Trees in Golden Temple Amritsar-Twenty Years of Consistent Care". Recently, Dr.Bal acted as a member of International Scientific Cmmittee Jubilee 2016 Workshop, Bucharest, Romania.

Dr.Bal remained a team leader in ber crop at PAU for many years. He has published 192 Research Papers in National and International Journals. He has written 5 books in horticulture which are very popular among students, growers, nurserymen, scientists and extension workers. Presently, he is engaged in compilation of horticultural work in a set of books for the cause of students, growers and society.
