Says, stray animals become big problem in Punjab

Ludhiana, July 26, 2019: Dr Amar Singh, MP from Sri Fatehgarh Sahib has demanded Central Law to deal with the stray animal menace.
While speaking in Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, he said the stray animal issue is affecting people in every part of the country. The current arrangements are inadequate and as a result, farmers are suffering immensely and there is a rise in road mishaps due to the stray animals. Given the historical Indian traditions of co-existence and worship of so many animals its imperative that the Government of India brings in a Central Law to deal with the issue.

While elaborating his demand, He said that stray animals have become a big problem in Punjab. To resolve this issue some points are needed consideration. Stray cattle have caused huge loss to farmers by wandering into farms and destroying crops. There have been a number of accidents caused by stray cattle on roads and in village/town streets. This is especially a problem for motorcyclists.
He said that a number of incidents have been reported where dogs have attacked and injured, and in some cases even killed, children. Majority of these animals have not been vaccinated, do not have proper healthcare or have do not have access to food leading to very poor quality of life for them. Municipal bodies and Panchayats do not have adequate resources or trained manpower to tackle the problem of stray animals.

He said that the problem needs to be looked at from two angles- firstly, the loss of property and life caused by the animals. Secondly, the animals themselves are suffering due to a lack of healthcare and proper sources of food.

He said that this is a matter of great shame since all our ancient texts not only give a position of respect to so many animals whom we worship but also stress on the co-dependence and co-existence of man and animals through folk stories and festivals. He urged the government to come up with a central law to tackle the problem.
