Hyderabad, December 14, 2015: City Orthodontist Dr G Chandra Sekhar got Elected as National President of Indian Orthodontic Society(IOS) for the year 2017  in a election held on the concluding day of the 50th Indian Orthodontic Conference on Sunday in City at HICC.
 
While he got elected another Telugu man Dr. Gangadhara Prasad K from Vizag took over as National President of IOS for 2016.
 
The Indian Orthodontic Society is a 6000 plus strong professional Society.  It is fifty years old organization of Orthodontists in the country.  Orthodontics is the one of the earliest specialties of Dentistry.  Indian Orthodontic Community one of the biggest in the World after USA.  It is a matter of great pride as both Doctors from Telugu States Telangana and Andhra Pradesh reached top positions of National Presidents for the years 2016 and 2017.  DR. G. Chandra Sekar was elected amidst the presence of 2500 delegates come to from across India and abroad. 
 
 
Dr. Alan Tom, President of World Federation of Orthodontics was among others who were participated in the conference.
 
Dr G Chandra Sekhar is working In Hyderabad as Professor Orthodontics at Panineeya Institute of Dental Science & Hospital. Dr Gangadhara Prasad works with Gitam in Vizag. Both of them have nearly 30 years of experience with them.  
 
Dr. Gangadhara Prasad K, who just assumed office as National President said, Orthodontic population in India is around 10000 doctors out of which 6000 are members of IOS. Five hundred professionals are added each year to the profession. 
 
Speaking further he said Government should regulate the profession as more and more unqualified Dentists are practicing as Orthodontists. Othodontic Doctors presently are accessible only to rich and government must help us reach critical and rural masses, he said.   
 
Government must also offer subsidy to those poor who need Cleft Lip Palate treatment.  As seven in every 1000 children born are born with this problem. Government gives subsidies to treat many other diseases. Many countries in the world also offer subsidies for the treatment of Cleft Lip Palate a Treatment he said
 
An estimated 24.5 million births per year happen in India every year.  Out of which,  27,000 and 33,000 are born with Cleft Lip Palate problem every year in India. Cleft Lip Palate deformity is one of the most common deformities among Indian children. "There are millions who need help, but cannot access care,"  said Dr. G. Chandra Sekhar  who will assume office as National President of IOS in the year 2017. And he will be in the office for one year.  
 
The Cleft Lip Palate deformity shouldn’t be a curse to people.  It has to be treated and confidence must be given to those who suffer with this deformity, the said. 
 
Both newly elected leaders also urged governments to set up Cleft Lip Palate Centers and promote the same
 
The Conference which just concluded  was a landmark conference as it was the Golden Jubilee year of the organization. The theme of the conference was aptly put as “"celebrating 50 golden years of creating smiles”. The milestone Golden Jubilee conference was hosted by AP & Telangana Orthodontic Professionals.
