Ludhiana, September 7, 2017: The 22nd Congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) held at York in UK affirmed to continue struggle for a word free of violence of all kinds.
Briefing about the outcome Dr Arun Mitra, newly elected Co-President of the organisation, first from South Asia, for this highest post of the body, said that in its final declaration the congress expressed satisfaction at the 'Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty' and outlined the strategy to make the nuclear weapons possessing states to sign the treaty when it opens for signature on 20th September 2017. For this, all affiliates would write to their respective governments. Congress also decided to put pressure on the gun producing industry against trading of the small arms. Socio Economic disparities among nations are one of the major causes for the ongoing arms race and violence. This anomaly has to be corrected and the gaps in the living standards reduced, the congress declared. Indian delegation organised a session on "Growing Religious Fundamentalism a Threat to Peace" and condemned the killing of Gauri Lankesh by the fundamentalists.
