Docs Dwelled on Challenges in Management of Sepsis

Ludhiana, August 23, 2016: The Department of Critical care Fortis Hospital Ludhiana with Ludhiana Society of Critical Care Medicine organised the CME – “Changing Scenario in Management of Sepsis” under the patronage of Facility Director Mr.Vivan Singh Gill.

More than 80 eminent doctors of North India attended the sessions which discussed the morbidity and mortality associated with the widespread infections in the body called Sepsis and it’s the changing trends. Mr. Vivan Singh Gill on this occasion highlighted that Sepsis affects nearly 18 million people Worldwide and this number is adding year on year. The mortality associated with sepsis remains high, around 30-40% is the global average. He further stressed upon the scenario in India which is especially worrisome, with a burden of 1 million Sepsis patients every year and mortality recorded due to severe sepsis being as high as 65%.

Dr Ankush Mehta, Medical Superintendent, enlightened upon some of the identified reasons for such high mortality are delayed diagnosis, adding to the severity, inadequate resuscitation and late referral to tertiary care centers.

Dr. Vinay Singhal, Organizing Chairman of CME emphasized that such alarming figures call for immediate action to streamline diagnosis, management and counseling for sepsis. This is the primary objective with which this CME has been organized. He further added that Sepsis is a very vast subject and the underlying ambiguity about its etiology and pathophysiology pose numerous treatment challenges. Dr Amit Gupta, Organizing Secretary said the management of Sepsis is difficult at Primary Care level. Hence the major discussion was on the diagnosis, early recognition and effective treatment to begin at Primary centers.

Eminent speakers from all over north India had talked about different aspects of managing the sepsis that include Dr RK Singh from SGPGIMS, Lucknow, Dr Vikas Bansal, Dr Gaurav Bhatia, Dr Vivek Gupta and Dr Abhishek Gupta.
