Ludhiana, March 28, 2013: In order to encourage medical research and teaching, Department of Medicine, DMCH is in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Michigan Health Sysytem.

Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Prem Kumar Gupta said that the tie-up between the DMCH and the University of Michigan Health Sysytem will help both the institutions to work together on clinical and non-clinical research programmes. The pact will also help students and teaching staff to share their experiences and ideas.

Giving this information, Medical Superintendent Dr Sandeep Puri (Professor and Head of Medicine) said that the aim behind the collaboration between the two institutes is to to facilitate faculty and student exchange and improve research programmes, learning experience and international exposure.

University of Michigan Health Sysytem (UMHS) is known for providing a broad range of high-quality care, with specialized centers for Alzheimer's disease, cancer, cardiovascular care, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, geriatrics, organ transplant, pediatrics, trauma/burn, vision, and women’s health research and care. Its hospitals have 925 licensed beds. As a tertiary care center, UMHS has 179 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, giving it one of the highest number of ICU beds in USA.

As an Initiative to this proposal, Dr Akinlolu Ojo, Professor of Medicine and Dr Vibha N.Lama, Associate Professor of Medicine from University of Michigan Health Sysytem today had an interactive session with the faculty and PG residents of the department of Internal Medicine.The visitors were taken a tour within hospital, including the Departments of Medicine, Nephrology and Emergency.

Through this tie-up, DMCH doctors have a platform to show their expertise in treating challenging cases, said Dr Akinlolu Ojo and Dr Vibha N. Lama. Further elaborating, Dr Ojo said that the exchange programme will benefit the medicine fraternity of both the countries. Under the exchange programme, faculty and residents from Department of Medicine will be visiting University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) for a period of four to six  weeks and faculty from UMHS will also visit DMCH periodically to conduct CMEs and scientific sessions and also to observe the routine patient care being provided by these institutions.

On their visit to DMCH, Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta gave mementos to Dr Akinlolu Ojo and Dr Vibha N. Lama. Also present on the occasion were Principal Dr Daljit Singh, Dean Academics Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Supdt. Dr Sandeep Puri and Assistant Dean Academics Dr Sandeep Kauhal
