Ludhiana, July 5, 2016: Vitamin-D deficiency is very common in children and nearly 80 percent children admitted to Pediatrics ICU are vitamin-D deficient and need prolonged ventilator support compared to others, said Dr Puneet Aulakh Pooni, Professor and Head of Pediatrics, Dayananad Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana and Director of Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Programme, who was recently invited to deliver lecture at 8th World Congress on Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In this conference, there were more than 1,500 specialists in pediatric critical care from 81 countries. There were 4 papers presented from DMCH. These studies were done in Pediatrics ICU of DMCH.
In another study, children who needed ventilator support for followed up for their lung functions for 6 months and many children still had some restrictive lung disease. In another study non-invasive blood pressure was compared to invasive BP, and it was found that in critically sick children invasive BP is better than Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP). DMCH was the first hospital in the region to start separate PICU in 1999, and now has 10 bedded fully equipped PICU. This level 3 PICU is the first one in the region to have fellowship in PICU, running successfully for the last 5 years.
