Ludhiana, November 8, 2017: Renowned urologist and transplant surgeon Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh from the city has been awarded Dr. PN Kataria memorial Oration award by the North zone urological society of India at its annual conference. Award was given by chief guest Baba Ramdev.
Dr Aulakh , who is presently the Head of Transplant Unit and Professor of Urology at DMC, Ludhiana, delivered the oration at the annual conferenece of North zone urological society of India held in Meerut from 3rd to 5th November, 2017. This
Is meeting of the urologists from all over the northern India and was attended by more than 300 urologists from all over north india .
P N Kataria Memorial Oration Award is given to the eminent urologist from the country who has excelled in his field of his work. Dr.Baldev Singh Aulakh,has won nation-wide recognition, both as an accomplished surgeon and for pioneering and exemplary work in the field of organ donation. An alumnus of the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, he has also been trained at Addenbrooke's hospital U.K., Cleveland Clinic and University of Maryland USA.
Dr. Aulakh has been associated with field of urology and transplant surgery for the more than 25years. A consummate surgeon, he has more than a 2000 kidney transplant surgeries to his credit. Some of these surgeries were first of their kind in India, viz three legged pair of pant anastomosis in donor with multiple arteries and operating a breast cancer patient for kidney donation. He’s the first urologist in North India to successfully implant bladder pacemaker (interstim neuromodulator) for urinary problem. He is also first in the state of Punjab to perform Chronic Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis operation, thereby, helping thousands of renal failure patients. Also a pioneer of PCNL (key hole surgeries for kidney stone) and laparoscopic urological procedures in Punjab (Laparoscopic removal of donor kidney and cancer bearing kidney ,laparoscopic repair of blocked kidney, laparoscopic adrenalectomy and prostatectomy etc) , he has performed nearly 20,000 operations for cancer, stone and other urological problems. His initiative and dedicated efforts were instrumental in establishing the transplant department in DMC, the first among the medical colleges of North India.
In his talk for the oration, he elaborated how shortage of kidneys for transplant can be overcome by swapping, ABO incompatible transplant and organ donation after brain death.
