A Speaker addressing International Day for Reduction of Natural Disaster being organised at Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala.

Kapurthala, October 14, 2015: Disaster management should be made a part of our educational curriculum at all levels in some way or other. By conducting frequent talks, seminars and training programmers we should involve our children and youth to combat disasters. Poor socio-economic conditions combine with these calamities to make things worse in India where eighty percent of geographical area is vulnerable to cyclones, floods, Tsunamies, droughts, landslides or earthquakes. Majority of our people are aware of either the problem nor its solution, integrated disaster management organization should be established at  with in few minutes on the occurrences of any disaster  which should be able to  reach people in the village and towns. These  ideas  were expressed by  Mr. Ankur Chauhan Director Institute of Disaster Management & Fire Sciences .Chandigarh  on  the occasion of International  Day for Reduction of Natural Disaster at Pushpa Gujral Science City .
Further he said time to time checking of rivers & dams & removing the extra mud from there, including removal of unauthorized construction from the river path/ routes. He listed Heavy rains, Cracks in dams, damages of saddle dams, excess deposition of mud on the layer/ bottom of the river/ dam, change in water flow route, obstructions in the water flow, sudden water flow joins in main river/ dams from other sources, as some of  the causes of floods.
Dr Neelma Jerath , Director General , Pushpa Gujral Science City, in her  address said that disasters disrupt progress and destroy the hard-earned fruits of painstaking developmental efforts, often pushing nations, in quest for progress, back by several decades. According to Dr Jerath, Whatever type of a disaster it may be, whether natural or man -made, it is the community itself that is the first to cope with it. It is what the people should know so that they are able to  lead  the first line of action at the time of disaster and  in reducing its impact. The importance of public education in this connection is most vital. Indigenous knowledge and risk management strategies are valuable, and must be integrated into disaster preparedness and response programmers. Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director Science City also present on this occasion.
