PAU HOLDS RESEARCH AND EXTENSION COUNCIL MEETING
Ludhiana, May 25, 2017: A meeting of Research and Extension Council was held at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) . The senior officials of PAU, University extension specialists, scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Farm Advisory Service Centres, and progressive farmers of Punjab participated in the meet.
Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Research, PAU, reviewed the research programmes of PAU of the last six months. He discussed in detail the performance of newly released crop varieties and their production –protection technologies, and farm machinery. He also deliberated on post-harvest technologies and concept of nutrition garden.
Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, PAU, discussed the extension activities of the last six months with special focus on the impact of new crop varieties and their protection technologies. He informed a total of 1380 PAU Doots were enrolled by the University in different villages of Punjab for speedy dissemination of technologies to the farmers. Disclosing that 96 villages were adopted by PAU to stop paddy straw burning, he said the concerted efforts of PAU scientists produced excellent results with no stubble burning reported in these villages. Dr Sidhu said various training courses, field days and awareness campaigns were also organized to enable farmers earn their livelihood in a better way. He further told the University also started a ‘farmer to farmers’ programme, under which a fellow farmer, selected by PAU, imparts knowledge to other farmers. In addition, the working PAU Kisan Portal was discussed at the meet. About paddy-wheat crops, Dr Sidhu said the area under these crops has increased in Punjab. On the occasion, progressive farmers were provided with biofertilizers.
During the meet, M.S. Dosanjh, PAU Fellow Farmer and Gurpreet Singh Shergill, Jaswant Singh and Nek Singh Khokh, progressive farmers, shared their views and gave feedback for reprioritizing the research and extension programmes of PAU.
