Department of Hindi celebrates birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak

Chandigarh, November 22, 2018: Literary presentations, cultural event and a visit to orphanage marked the celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Jayanti at Department of Hindi, Panjab University, today. The event began at 10 am with a short film on the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak and this was followed by students and research scholars making presentations on the various aspects of life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak. Dr.Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Department of Hindi, said that, "Commemorative events like these are not only an occasion to extend reverence to the great thinkers but also an opportunity for the students to learn about the life and message of spiritual thinkers.” He further added that, “ We have presentations, shabad recitation and a visit to orphanage, so the event not only encourages academic discussions on the teachings of Sri Guru Nanak but also helps the students imbibe His life message.”
The literary presentations for the day were enriching and informed the students about the several aspects of the teachings of Shri Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism and first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Paramveer singh, research scholar from Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, presented an expert talk on the subject. Presentations were followed by Shabad recitation. Baljeet Kaur, Maninderjeet Kaur, Manjinder Kaur ( research scholars from Hindi Dept) and Sanjeev, nirmala and Satnam ( students from Hindi Dept) were amongst the presenters for the day. Dr. Inderpal Sidhu, Dean Fine Arts and also member of PU Syndicate, attended the program. Faculty from Department of Hindi; Prof. Neerja Sood, Prof. Baijnath Prasad and Prof. Sehgal, were also present at the event. Program was conducted by research scholar Supriya Dutta and concluded with certificate distribution.
Later in the day, students from the Department of Hindi also visited the orphanage in Sector 15 to spend time with children and celebrate Sri Guru Nanak Jayanti with them. It is also pertinent to mention that this happens to be the 549th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak and marks the beginning of year long celebrations planned globally for the 550th birth anniversary which falls next year.
