DENGUE: All Machines Should Be Functional Jayani Tells Civil Surgeons

Chandigarh, September 22, 2015: Taking strong exception to the reports pouring in regarding inadequate infrastructure in the government hospitals especially dealing with dengue patients and also doctors sending patients for clinical examination outside government health institutions, Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani warned the doctors to be more responsive while handling dengue patients. Any kind of laxity on the part of doctors would not be tolerated. He said that the Punjab government was providing free investigation and treatment to dengue patients.
The Health department has issued a fresh advisory to all the civil surgeons to intensify vector control measures in view of the recent rains. In the advisory issued today, it was said that in view rain forecast by Indian Meteorology Department, there is a possibility of water stagnation in containers and disposed plastic and junk material giving rise to breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.It is advised that the vector control measures need to be intensified to contain the problem of dengue. All concerned officials and departments have been asked to intensify the ongoing efforts to check dengue.
Sending across a clear message to all the civil surgeons, the Minister said that the civil surgeons would be held directly responsible if any of the diagnostic machines was found out of order. Besides this he has asked them to ensure complete medical facilities in the hospitals mainly in especially created isolation wards for the dengue patients. The Health Minister has asked the Civil surgeons to ensure that no patient suffering from fever or suspected to have Dengue should be denied treatment and the bed strength, if needed, should be increased to accommodate all patients who are visiting the hospitals for treatment for suspected dengue.
To take stock of the exact plight of dengue patients’ right from the diagnosis till their discharge, Mr. Jayani said that the NGOs have been roped in who would be sending decoy patients in the hospitals and would be directly reporting to the Minister himself. He reiterated the resolve of Punjab government to provide quality health care facilities to the people. Mr. Jayani said that he stood by what he said on the floor of Punjab Vidhan Sabha that all dengue patients were being treated free of cost in the government hospitals.
