Cultural confluence breaks barriers at Surajkund Mela

Faridabad (Haryana) February 6,2014 :The 28th Surajkund International Crafts Mela celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of India by showcasing its various cultural and other symbolic elements. Be it rain or sun, the entire festive spirit is laced with nonstop and soul-stirring performances, which are the locus of tourist attraction. Folk performances by foreign troupes make the entire experience a splendid one.
A medley of exotic performances was presented at Natyashala on Wednesday evening – these acts have been integral to the popularity of the Mela.
Thousands of visitors gather in large numbers everyday to witness scintillating performances. The Mela has always strived to ensure that every year it bridges boundaries, connects cultures and breaks barriers, which hamper national integration, and a wide variety of these performances attribute significantly in this mission. Both national and international performers in their colourful traditional attires exhibit some breathtaking performances.
This year, artistes from Russia are performing at the Surajkund International crafts Mela for the first time. They are staging unique and interesting Russian folk dance forms like Molodychka and Chernomorec, which need a perfect fancy stomping and squatting along with matching hand and body movement.
Dmitry and Anatolly, dancers from Russia are enjoying the festivities of the Mela. “Indian dance forms like sun on the earth and also the people are sweet,” both say in unison.
The effervescent Tajikistan dancers at the Mela are entertaining the audience thoroughly with their spectacular performances. Talabsho Mukimov, a TV journalist-cum-dancer from Tajikistan and an expert of many dance forms, says, “This Mela has offered a good platform for dancers like us to come forward and watch Indian culture up-close. This Mela strengthens friendship between both nations.”
Kyrgyzstan dancers are presenting their national dance ‘Dream of Girl’ for the first time at the Mela. Alina, one of the dancers, says, “We seek inspiration from Indian dances like Bharatnatyam and Kathak.”
Pretty Uzbekistani dancers, Hamadamona Mahira – a belly dance specialist – and Sulemanva Dilrabo had performed at the Mela two years back as well.  “The Mela is well-organised where different nations participate and everyone is in for a cultural treat,” quips Mahira.
Besides these, there have been foreign dance troupes from Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka are dishing out seamless and thrilling performances.
 
Performance of the day
At Surajkund International Crafts Mela, the Hasya Kavi Sammelan by famous poet Surender Sharma and party was organised at Natyashala on February 6 (Thursday). Surender Sharma, one of the first few poets of Hasya Ras (Comic and Satiric Poetry) entertained a jam-packed audience at Natyashala. The audience enjoyed witty rib-tickling wisecracks to the core leaving them in peals of laughter. Mahendar Ajnabi, Ved Prakash, Yusuf Bhardwaj and Ritu Goyal were among the other poets to entertain the audience.

Actress Mita Vashisht to perform ‘Lalded’, a solo one act play at Surajkund International Crafts Mela on February 7. The play is a theatrical collage of poems, songs, thoughts and philosophy of the medieval poetess Lal Ded from Kashmir, whose poems or vaakhs were short, pithy and they resonated secular values transcending the narrow confines of caste and religion that had crippled India in those times. Everything about Lalded -- her life, poems, challenged dogmas and ossified perceptions is encapsulated in this play.
