Chandigarh, November 28, 2014: The crushing of cane in sugar mills has begun from Nov.20.
The official spokesman of the Agriculture department said that in all 16 sugar mills are operational in the state out of which nine are in the Co-Operatives and seven in the private sector. The crushing capacity of the co-operative sugar mills in 15766 TCD and that of private mills is 14000 TCD.
He further said that the mills required 836 lac quintal of sugarcane but cane production this year is expected to be 720 lac quintal will be available for crushing. He also said that facilities have been provided in form of latest machinery that will serve the purpose of weighing the cane produce. He also said that the Government has appealed to the farmers of the state to bring top quality cane in the mills which could be processed to make sugar of high quality so as to enable the mills to earn more profit.
