Kapurthala, November 30, 2019: Creativity and innovation are the two key drivers for socio-economic development of a country. It is in this context that the Govt. of India is laying tremendous emphasis in promoting innovation in a big way. This was expressed by Dr. B.S Ghuman, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University Patiala on the occasion of 27 State Level Children Science Congress at Science City Kapurthala.
The State Level Children Science Congress-2019 was organized at Science City in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science & Technology Chandigarh. Further he said that such programmes encourage competitiveness and entrepreneurship among young students and motivate them to take up careers in science and technology
On this occasion Dr Neelima Jerath, DG, PGSC informed that, National Children's Science Congress is a nationwide Science Communication programme of National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi which started in the year 1993. It lays stress on “Learning by Doing” and on activities which relate class room knowledge to real life situations. It also provides an opportunity to lakhs of children all over the country to enjoy learning of science and satisfy their creative urge and curiosity. Children in the age group of 10-17 years are eligible to participate in the congress by developing an action oriented research project under the guidance of a teacher. A minor research project is undertaken by the student and presented in the school in the first instance. Projects finalized at the School level are presented at the District level competition where various schools participate and compete for State level selection. 8 winning projects from Junior Group (10-13 years) and 8 winners from Senior Group participate at the State level competition from where a limited number of projects are selected from the state for the National Level Congress. The number of projects to be selected at the State level is as per the state wise quota allocated by DST, GOI, which is 16 from Punjab. She further informed that the theme of this year’s Children Science Congress is “Science Technology and Innovation for a clean green and healthy nation. More than 300 students and 150 teachers from all Districts of Punjab participated in the event to exhibit their creativity and innovativeness, and more particularly, their ability to solve societal problems experienced locally using science.
