Ludhiana, May 9, 2014: Taking serious cognizance of anti-encroachment drive by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, Communist Party of India (CPI), Ludhiana Unit has said that displacing the people in such a manner is inhuman.

In a statement released here today Dr Arun Mitra, D P Maur – District Assistant Secretaries, Ramesh Rattan – City Secretary and Gurnam Sidhu – City Assistant Secretary of the CPI demanded that they should be provided with alternative arrangements immediately by the government. Where was the corporation when illegal construction activity was going on, they asked.

Further, they said now when the people have been living at these places for a long period, to displace them suddenly is uncalled for. The officials who allowed and then continuously ignored should be held accountable. It is the failure of the successive governments to provide housing to the people which have led to such situation. The governments have allowed the land mafia to grow because of which land prices have gone out of the reach of common people.

They sought that the government should frame a housing policy and construct multistory houses for the poor and middle income group.

They also demanded construction of labour colonies in different parts of the city.
