Ludhiana, April 12, 2017: Rockman Skill Development Centre (RSDC), Ludhiana held a convocation ceremony for the first batch of students today.

During convocation ceremony, certificates to mark the successful completion of the training were given to students by Suman Kant Munjal, chairman and Managing Director, Rockman Industries. The certification has been provided by Sector Skill Councils, which falls under the Government of India’s National Skill Certification and Monetary Reward Scheme.

All students have been employed in engineering industries in Ludhiana and other parts of Punjab after completing courses in industrial training, basic computer literacy and soft skills.

RSDC a non-profit institute aims at boosting employment opportunities through skill training for the youth is a part of Rockman Industries’ “Mission Parivartan” . It is engaged in various social initiatives like rural development, education and environment.

Since its inception, 400 students have been trained in industrial vocations, soft skills and basic computer literacy at RSDC. These trainings include CNC Operator, Fitter, Electrician and Welder. The students have become industry-ready and have employment opportunities in the engineering and manufacturing units in Punjab. The district has a robust industrial base with a mix of MSMEs and large enterprises, contributing 30% to Punjab’s overall manufacturing output. These include bicycle, bicycle components, textiles, hosiery, cycle rickshaws, machine tools, automotive parts, agriculture implements etc.

Suman Kant Munjal said that when we inaugurated RSDC in Ludhiana, we had aimed at providing employment opportunities to the youth of Punjab. Today we have two centres, in Ludhiana and Haridwar. It is a proud day for us at Rockman Industries. This is our small contribution towards nation building. Not only has the first batch of students successfully completed their training, they have all found employment in their respective fields. On behalf of the Rockman Industries team, I wish them the best for their future.”

The future plans for RSDC include opening more RSDCs that will help youth in developing skills and hence support them in finding employment. Rockman Industries is working closely with the National Skill Development Centre and organizations that specialize in imparting various vocational courses to the youth. Besides employment at industrial units, the purpose of attracting students to RSDC is also to make them self-reliant and to encourage them to become entrepreneurs.

A multi-pronged approach was taken to attract the youth to enrol at RSDC. These included partnership with NGOs, academic institutions and volunteers, who were responsible for mobilization in their operational domains. Further, pamphlets were distributed through volunteers and staff of RSDC in identified locations, residential colonies, villages etc. and to the workers in different industries, who could in turn reached out to relatives, neighbours and friends. Other steps included display of information/notices at Rockman Industries plants, and contacting villages within 50 kilometres radius through various means.

Rockman Industries’ “Mission Parivartan”, under which RSDC operates, is the company’s social initiative focused at Sustainable Rural Development. It promotes village level entrepreneurship, empowering youth, women through income generation activities, creating awareness on social issues through digital education, promoting clean technology solutions, and promoting Social Responsibility among Rockman Industries employees.
