Chandigarh, August 8, 2014: The Advanced Paediatric Center of the PGIMER and Chandigarh-based Sahayta Cancer Sehyog pooled their efforts to give Rakhi, the festival of sacred threads, a new, constructive and meaningful dimension for children undergoing treatment for cancer.
Volunteers from Sahyata Cancer Sehyog and doctors from the Advanced Paediatric Center of the country’s premier medical institute spent the day with children battling cancer at the APC, as well as their parents. A spirit of gaiety and hope filled the atmosphere. They were distributed Rakhis, attractive gifts and refreshments to make the day special for them. The children, range from infancy to early teens. Some of them are students and come from all over the country. The initiative is spearheaded by Dr.Amita Trehan and Dr. Deepak Bansal of PGI alongwith volunteers of the NGO.
All major festivals are celebrated in the unique spirit. Cultural programmes and painting competitions are organized on a regular basis so that the hospital visits of the children are less stressful and they can lead as normal lives as possible.
This endeavour is one its kind in the country and perhaps other parts of the world due to the initiative of the doctors and the NGO.
