The first day proceedings of CME programme include lecture on ‘Epidemiology and burden of disease’ by Course Chairman-Dr Rajeev Ahuja from MAMC, New Delhi.

Burn is one of the most severe injuries a person can suffer. In India, burns are more common in poor people due to over -crowding, open stove cooking, floor level cooking and poor house planning.

In fact burn injury can be classified as a chronic disease as it requires long term management, supervised rehabilitation and psychosocial support, said Dr Ahuja.

Dr Karoon Aggarwal spoke on ‘Patho-physiology of burns’ and ‘Metabolic responses’. The topic on ‘Assessment, recording and medico-legal aspects’ was elaborated by Dr Arun Goel from MAMC, New Delhi

In his address to the audience, Course Coordinator Dr Sanjeev Uppal (Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery) said that the care provided to the victims of burn injury immediately after sustaining burns can largely affect the extent and depth of the wound. Although standard guidelines have been formulated by various burn associations, they are still not well known to public at large in our country. He suggested various measures of First aid and initial management during burn accidents.

Dr Sunil Katyal, Member, Punjab Medical Council (PMC) informed that the CME is accredited for 8 credit hours by Punjab Medical Council. He said that organising of such CMEs help the medical practitioners to update themselves frequently as radical changes are occurring in the practice of medicine with the advent of new technologies, changes in health care delivery, changing demographics and patterns of diseases.
