CM calls up Sushma Swaraj for ensuring safety and security of detained Punjabis in Kuwait

Chandigarh, August 30, 2014: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today called up the Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to ensure the safety and security of Punjabis, who were taken into custody by the Kuwaiti police following a brawl on Thursday.

Disclosing this here today a spokesperson of Chief Minister’s Office said that during the telephonic conversation, Badal apprised the Union Minister about the plight of detained Punjabis who were passing through extreme mental harassment and agony at the hands of Kuwaiti authorities. Seeking prompt intervention of Union government for ensuring the safety of detained Punjabis, the Chief Minister said that the Union government should make all out efforts for saving their precious lives. Badal said that it was the high time that the Union government must use all the diplomatic channels for ensuring the security of these detained Punjabis in Kuwait.

The Chief Minister said that though it was beyond the state government’s jurisdiction help to help the people in other countries and therefore the Punjab government appeals to the Government of India (GoI) to take a prompt action for saving the life of these Punjabis. Expressing solidarity with the families of the arrested Punjabis, Badal said that the state government was solidly with them in this hour of crisis.

Responding to the issue, Swaraj assured the Chief Minister that she was personally keeping a close tab on the situation and have already directed the Secretary External Affairs (Gulf) GoI to keep close liaison with the Kuwait Foreign ministry to ensure the safety and security of the detained Punjabis.
