Chandigarh Police team picks up Connect UTCA League Cup

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police Team picked up the Connect UTCA League cup after defeating its rival team Punjab and Haryana High Court Association team on Sunday. This day and night T20 match was played at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16 on Sunday. The member of the parliament, Chandigarh Kirron Kher, Sh Parimal Rai (IAS), Adviser to Administrator-UT and UT Cricket Association’s President Sanjay Tandon gave away the prizes to the winners. The winning team secured the Cup and cash prize of Rs 51,000.

After winning the toss, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Association team decided to bat first. Suresh Kumar scored 37 runs, Rajinder Malhotra made 25 runs and Gurdeep Rana contributed 21 runs. The team scored 130 runs at loss of five wickets.

While chasing the target, the Chandigarh Police team made 131 runs in 16.4 overs only at a loss of one wicket. Gurdeep Singh made 41 runs including 3 fours, 1 six. A brilliant performance was given by Balwinder Singh Junior who scored 64 runs which included 8 fours. Besides, he took two wickets by giving only 18 runs in the final match. Both of them remained not- out. The trophy of Man of the Match went to Balwinder Singh Junior and he also secured the best batsman trophy.

The Best Bowler award went to Rajiv Kumar from Chandigarh Police who took 8 wickets by giving only 58 runs in this tournament. Apart from this, the best all rounder award went to Gurdeep Rana of Punjab and Haryana High court Association team who scored 77 runs and took six wickets in the series.

The runners-up trophy went to Punjab and Haryana High Court Association team and the team was also given cash prize of Rs 31,ooo.

While highlighting the issue of up-gradation of the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16 Chandigarh the President of UTCA, Sanjay Tandon said, “The international cricket match was played at this stadium in 2007 only and after that no big tournaments have taken place here. I want to request the MP to take up the issue of bringing the stadium up to the international mark and ensure the recognition from BCCI. The well- known players in Cricket from Chandigarh either represent Punjab or Haryana. If this stadium gets state-of-the art facilities then we can certainly nurture talent from our own city. Besides, UTCA will keep promoting sports by organising various tournaments from time to time. The idea is to find more cricketers like Yuvraj Singh from the city beautiful”.

Kirron Kher promised to take up the issue of up-gradation of this beautiful stadium with the higher authorities. She also said that UTCA will grow and create right kind of environment to promote sports under the leadership of Sanjay Tandon.

The friendly match was followed by celebration and a cultural show. Other teams which competed in the League which had started- off on August 15 included Connect, Competent, Axis Bank, Reliance Jio, Mohali Industry Association and Goyal Bhatheja and Co. In this tournament 13 matches were played following the BCCI Rules and Regulations.
