CBI CASE: 4 years RI to 2 officials of Postal Deptt and 2 others

Jalandhar, December 4,  2012: The Special Judge, for CBI, cases, Guwahati has convicted Mahadeb Pathak and Maheswar Nath, both then Postal Assistants (Deposit) working in General Post office (GPO) Guwahati ; Barja Kanta Kalita, NSC Agent (Private Person) and Rajendra Maharaj,  PLW, Guwahati GPO, Guwahati and sentenced them to undergo three years Rigorous Imprisonment.

The Court has also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 each to the alleged accused Mahadeb Pathak and Maheswar Nath both employees of postal department.

According to the CBI spokesperson, a case was registered on January 29, 1998 U/s. 120B/420 IPC and Section 13(1)(d) of PC Act., 1988 against Deputy Post Master – II, GPO, Guwahati ;  Braja Kalita, (Standardise Agency System) SAS Agent, and unknown others on the allegations of criminal conspiracy in opening of 48 Saving Bank accounts in fictitious name with GPO during the year 1996, depositing cheque / dividend of UTI and other financial institutions amounting to about Rs. 6,91,856 in the said fictitious accounts and subsequent withdrawal of the same.

On completion of investigation charge sheet was filed on August 23, 2012 in the court of Special Judge, CBI, Assam, Guwahati against  Mahadeb Pathak ; Maheswar Nath, both the then Postal Assistants (Deposit),working in General Post Office(GPO) Guwahati ; Barja Kanta Kalita, NSC Agent of Kamrup, Assam (Private Person) and  Rajendra Maharaj, PLW, Guwahati GPO, Guwahati U/s. 120B, 420, 468, 471 IPC and Section 13(2) R/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act., 1988.

During the trial, the Court found the accused persons guilty and convicted them.
