New Delhi, May 23, 2014: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Superintendent & an Inspector, both of Central Excise, Purulia (West Bengal)  and a private person for demanding & accepting a bribe of Rs.15,000 from the complainant.

The arrested accused were produced before the Special Judge, Asansol (West Bengal). The Superintendent and the private person were remanded to judicial custody till 4.6.2014 while the Inspector was granted bail on medical grounds.

A case was registered against the accused U/s 7 & 12 of P.C. Act, 1988 on the allegation that the Superintendent of Central Excise office, Purulia (West Bengal) had demanded an illegal gratification of Rs.18,000 from the proprietor of a proposed Bidi Manufacturing Unit at Purulia for issuing a registration certificate to the said unit and the Inspector & the private person (conduit) had actively abetted the said demand.

The amount of bribe was reduced to Rs.15,000 by the Superintendent subsequently. CBI laid a trap near Central Excise office, Purulia where the bribe amount was received by the Private Person (conduit) from the Complainant on the alleged instructions of the Superintendent and the Inspector.

Searches have been conducted at the residential & office premises of the accused. Further investigation is continuing.
