Students of LPU appreciating the beauty of flowers during flower exhibition at LPU today.

Jalandhar, February 20, 2016: The School of Agriculture of Lovely Professional University has been able to grow a wide and rare variety of flowers as part of students’ academic projects and research works. The School of Agriculture has now come forward to involve various other educational and allied sectors of Jalandhar region to showcase and share this rare achievement with them by inaugurating two-day Flower Show & Competition at University Campus, today. The show is organized under 9 classes and 97 sections to accommodate incredible variety of flowers including Aster, Calendula, Dianthus, Nemesia, Phlox, Asparagus, Ferns and more. Competitions include flower arrangement; crotons, cut-flowers showcase, flower-ornaments, Bonsai, pot arrangement, landscape and more. Schools, colleges, amateurs, government, semi-government horticulture departments, private institutions, nurseries and individuals are hugely participating. More than one thousand species are being showcased. Agriculture Industry, Nurseries, Self Help Groups are training students and visiting people about seeds, gardening skills, agricultural tools, poly houses and irrigation methods. Hundreds of prizes will be distributed to the winners under different competitive titles on the concluding day of the show i.e. 21st February, 2016.

Eminent Judges for the competition are formerly National Consultant (Floriculture) Ministry of Commerce Dr APS Gill; Formerly Head Department of Floriculture Punjab Agriculture University Dr JS Arora; International Exporter for Flower & Seeds Mr Avtar Singh; SDO Horticulture PWD Mr BM Bhardwaj, Deputy Directors from Districts of Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur & Jalandhar Mr Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Mr Naresh Kumar & Dr Satbir Singh. Apart from educational institutions other participating agencies included Florance Flora Fans (Bangalore); Central Government of India supported all women Self Help group-Kandi Area Fruit & Herbal Processing Society; District Horticulture Departments of Punjab Government, Technocare Nursery & Garden Center (Baddowal); Earth Agro (Mohali); Tara Nursery (Chachoki); Unison Engineering (Jalandhar); Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, Maharaja Ranjit Singh War Memorial Phillaur and many more.

As a fantastic variety of flowers is available during these days of spring season, a large number of participants have thronged the campus to pay an authentic tribute to nature and its beautiful creation. Ms Renu Sharma who is representing an all women Self Help Group and a House-Maker Smt Rajinder Kaur inspired girl-students at LPU to adopt medicinal flowers growth not only as a hobby but as an entrepreneurial project also.

LPU Pro- Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal shared: “Our School of Agriculture has regularly been achieving marvelous attainments since its inception. Only a few days back it has got prestigious regional and national prizes for its highly applauded project on water resource management. It also organized Chrysanthemum flowers’ exhibition which was inaugurated by MP from Southall (London) UK. The present flower show and competition is on the same lines. Indirectly, it is indeed PM Modi’ call to have India clean and green, ultimately for the betterment of us all.”
