Ban manual sewerage cleaning, provide safety kits to Safai Karamcharis

Ludhiana, November 3, 2017: Going down in the gutters without safety kits has killed large number of sewerage workers. Even those who survive are likely to fall prey to serious illnesses because the sewer lines contain hazardous gasses and solid as well as liquid waste material. This must be immediately banned and the sewer lines should be cleaned by machines.

This was said by Dr Arun Mitra ENT Surgeon while addressing a meeting organized by the Safai Labour Union Ludhiana. This is the most hazardous job but the workers are not given remuneration due to them. Giving details of the health risks to them Dr Mitra said that even those safai karamcharies who are engaged in roadside cleaning and other cleanup tasks are exposed to several health risks. They should be provided with masks, gloves and other modern safety equipments. He called upon the workers to stress upon the authorities for these demands. Com Vijay Kumar thanked Dr Mitra for his valuable medical advice. The safai labour union honored Dr Arun Mitra by presenting him a shawl on his elevation to the post of Co-President of IPPNW.
