Bagha reviews implementation of various welfare schemes

Chandigarh, December 4, 2014: Rajesh Bagha, Chairman, Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission reviewed the implementation of various welfare schemes of different departments launched by the Centre/State Government here today. While presiding over the 16th meeting of Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission said that Bagha underlined the commitment of the SAD-BJP government for the overall development and welfare of the weaker section/students belonging to the SC & BC communities.
While taking stock of the progress of the welfare schemes Bagha asked the officers to make sure that the deserving candidates of these downtrodden communities must derives the real benefit of the schemes. He also instructed the officers to make a foolproof service delivery mechanism so as to minimise the hurdles for these under privileged sections.
In the meeting Director, Welfare Department, Punjab informed the commission that in the year 2013-14, the state government has disbursed Rs.279.77 lakh Post Matric Scholarship schemes to finance the study expenses of 366604 students belonging to the SC communities whereas Rs.3000.00 lakh has been released for free books to the SC girl students up to 10th class under attendant scholarship scheme.
In the meeting it was brought to the notice of the Commissioner that during 2013-14 about 225 cases were registered under SC/ST grievance redressal system out of which 64 were presented before the court, 36 were dismissed and 58 are pending with the police. The commission has decided to get dismissed cases reviewed from D.I.G. and present the challan under 30 days. Besides this,it was also agreed upon to appoint a D.S.P. rank officer as inquiry officer instead of an A.S.I. regarding FIR cases.
During the meeting, the local bodies department told the commission that in keeping with the instructions of the Supreme Court, a compensation of Rs.10 lakh is being given to the families of Sewer men and Safaisewals who had died after 1991. Apart from this, all the sewer men are being provided with protective heads. In the meeting other issues like providing computers to make good the shortage of staff and awarding compensation in cases of violence were also raised.
In the meeting apart from non-governmental members Dalip Singh Pandhi, Prakash Singh Garhdiwal and Bharati Kennedy, Director of local bodies department Priyank Bharti, Deputy Director SC Commission Raj Bahadur Singh and representative from welfare and police department were also present.
