Industry brings scientific fun & challenge to school children

Chandigarh, December 23, 2018: Society of Automotive Engineers (SAEINDIA), in association with host Chitkara University, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Maruti Suzuki India Limited as sponsors, organize ‘A World In Motion’ (AWIM) National Olympics on 22nd - 23rd December, 2018 at Chitkara University, Rarjpura Campus.

Over 260 school students (5th & 6th Standard) from various parts of country would participate in this event. Students, teachers and volunteers from various government and private institutions travelled from about 37 cities to participate in this event.

Winners of Jet Toy and Skimmer competition were awarded Rs.50,000/- each scholarship. Students also received different types of category awards in around 19 categories.

The participating students worked as a team, applying scientific design concepts and exploring the principles of physics such as force, momentum, friction, jet propulsion, etc. to create moving vehicles like skimmer and balloon powered Jet-Toy cars. The competition was judged by a panel of eminent personalities from the automotive industry.

Mr. Sanjay Nibandhe, Chairman, SAEINDIA Western Section, Dy. Director, HTC & FID Operations, ARAI, Chakan said, “AWIM is a contest for School students where fun & challenge are the two main ingredients. This innovative, hands-on, physical science curriculum was designed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), USA. After USA, India is the second country to conduct the competition at National level for school children.”

There are 37 cities across the country, AWIM City Level program is held at this year. Subsequently all the winning teams of Jet Toy & Skimmer of the City Olympics came for National level. This year close to 3500 students contested at regional levels out of which 260 reached the finals being held here today.

Many corporations across the industry have committed their resources under Corporate Social Responsibility to support AWIM. Altair, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), ATS, Eaton India, ICAT, Indian Oil Corporation, John Deere, Lumax, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Maruti Suzuki, Poly Plastics, Springer Nature, Trim India, Uno Minda, etc. in India have supported the event in different cities of India and provided with engineers who voluntarily mentored students and teachers.

SAEINDIA has trained about four million and 25000 volunteers from industry and engineering colleges have been trained under this program.

The event had Industry Captains in attendance with Dr. Bala K. Bharadvaj, President SAEINDIA and Managing Director, Boeing Engineering and Technology Center India being the Chief guest at the valedictory ceremony.

Speaking about the event, Dr Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara University, said:

“SAEINDIA’s ‘A World in Motion’ literacy-based program is helping school students build a solid foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) literate workforce, at the pre-professional education level. Chitkara University is honoured to be a part of this endeavor and contribute to the growth of the future generation.”
