Chandigarh, February 7, 2018: Audio Radio documentary / Radio drama competition by SCS, PU School of Communication Studies (SCS), Panjab University’s(PU) official community radio station 91.2 MHz. Jyotirgamaya is celebrating World Radio Day which falls on February 13 every year. Prof.Archana R.Singh, Chairperson, SCS informed that it also co-incides with the 7th Anniversary of the Radio Station of PU. She informed that on this occasion, an open competition for the tricity on audio radio documentary/ radio drama for all the listeners is being organized on the theme “Radio as a medium of education”.
She added that Radio is a mass medium that can be harnessed to enhance an education campaign since it can span great distances and reach a large number of listeners.
Because of its wide coverage, relatively low unit cost, ability to reach those who are illiterate, it has proved to be an effective educational medium, she added.
The fact that Radio is a non-visual can be harnessed to improve education quality since the listener is compelled to support the sound message by using his/her own imagination. No other medium has this educational power of stimulating and developing the abstract thinking of its audience and enriching and activating the listener's imagination.

All the participants have to take care of the following conditions:-
1. A team of maximum 3 persons can work on a project.
2. Participants should be students from any educational institution in tricity.
3. Last date of submitting your project is Feb12, 2018 till 5 p. m.
4. Duration of the drama/ documentary should be 3-5 minutes.
5. Results will be declared on the radio Feb14, 2018.
6. Project should be in MP3/Wave format.
Winner will get a chance to host the show ‘Music ka Funda’ or ‘Sureeli Raatein’, the most popular music shows of the radio station.
Prof. Archana informed that the Community Radio Station (CRS) of Panjab University is acting as a unifying agent amongst the University faculty, students and also the community. The station offers 3 broadcasts a day for over 11 hours duration. The radio programmes can be heard over a range of 10 kms and the listenership base is on the rise.
It was further informed that the aim of setting up the CRS is to impart knowledge and information related to education, health and environment, social, cultural and local issues and to provide a platform for dialogue and discussion amongst the community members, students and faculty. Jyotirgamaya also serves as a platform for awareness generation, education and experience sharing with the community in the vicinity of the CRS. Having been set up by the School of Communication Studies, the CRS also acts as a training ground for the students of electronic media.
Jyotirgamaya is setting new benchmarks every day. The Public Relations Council of India awarded the special programme " Hamari Beti' run by PU CRS. It has been awarded a yearlong project from National Council for Science and Technology, GoI, New Delhi with Punjab State Council of Science and Technology for production of radio programmes on Women's Health and Nutrition. The programme called 'Sehat ka Vardaan, Naari ka Samaan' covers 365 topics of women's health. The station connects the community with experts from the fields of Medicine, Social Welfare, Nutrition, and administration.
In collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh under the National Urban Livelihood Mission GoI, the PU Radio runs a free of cost certificate course in Radio Programme Production for the Economically Weaker Section of the society. IN its latest accomplishment, Radio Jyotirgamaya has collaborated with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and UNICEF for the production and broadcasting of a radio show based on adolescent issues called 'Full on Nikki'.
