The saga of Golden Arrow Division is resplendent with courage, valour and bravery. The Division Area of responsibility witnessed many battles since 1956, especially 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak War.
The Battle of Asal Uttar was one of the largest tank battles, fought during Indo-Pak War in September 1965, wherein the Pakistan Army advanced with its tanks and infantry into the Indian territory, capturing the town of Khem Karan, five kms from the International Border. Indian troops launched a fierce counter attack thereafter. The advancing Pakistan troops and tanks were ambushed, wherein 100 Pakistani Patton tanks were destroyed or captured. The battle ended in a decisive Indian victory.
The conflict witnessed the largest tank versus tank battles in the history, after World War II, during the Battle of Asal Uttar. Company Quarter Master Havildar (CQMH) Abdul Hamid of 4 GRENADIERS displayed exemplary courage and valour, and destroyed many Pakistani Patton Tanks, by his recoilless gun. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, posthumously.

Param Vir Chakra, also known as Asal Uttar Day was organised by Agnibaan Brigade, under the aegis of the Golden Arrow Division at the Abdul Hamid Memorial, near Asal Uttar village. Deputy General Officer Commanding Golden Arrow Division laid the wreath at the ‘CQMH Abdul Hamid Memorial’ on this occasion. The event was conducted with the fervour, befitting the occasion. A Guard of Honour at the resting place of the brave martyr was presented. The ceremony was attended by a large number of serving soldiers, Ex-servicemen, Police officials & Civil dignitaries.
