Arjuna Awardee LPU Student Gurpreet once again won International Medal for India in South Korea

LPU student Gurpreet Singh clinched a silver medal at 52nd ISSF World Shooting Championship held in Changwon, South Korea.

Jalandhar, September 17, 2018: Arjuna Awardee & Olympian Gurpreet Singh, who is pursuing BA Programme with Lovely Professional University (LPU), has once again won brought glory to the country by winning an international medal. Occasion was 25 Mt standard pistol individual competition (men) at 52nd ISSF World Shooting Championship held in Changwon, South Korea. Gurpreet clinched a silver medal in the senior men’s standard pistol event. Former Commonwealth Games gold-medalist, Gurpreet fired a score of 579 to finish second behind Ukraine’s Pavlo Korostylov, who shot a score of 581.

With Gurpreet’s solid contribution, India has been placed at number 3 with medals’ tally of 11 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze for a total of 27 Medals. This makes India’s the best performance at prestigious International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship. In the senior competition, Gurpreet ensured that the contingent signed off on a positive note with his silver. Highlighting, along with veteran Indian shooter Vijay Kumar, two LPU students Gurpreet and Amapreet Singh have also secured 4th position in the team event of this same competition. Now, as per the stated policy, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will take the final call on selection leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. It will be based on the aggregate scores of shooters, in international tournaments and selection trials.

Congratulating the ace-shooter of the country, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal appreciated Gurpreet for preferring admission at LPU. Mr Mittal also conveyed his best wishes to the winning shooter that he might keep on bringing more laurels to the country. Mr Mittal also expects an Olympic Medal from him, if he gets selected for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. LPU students and staff members are also very happy and filled with pride on seeing Gurpreet’s best performance on world level.

Worth mentioning, Gurpreet Singh represented India in Rio Olympics 2016 and secured 7th place in 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. He has also won gold medals (with games record) in 25m and 10m Rapid Fire Pistol (Pairs) events and Bronze medal in 25m Individual event in 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games; Silver medal in 25m Centre Fire Pistol Men’s Team event during 2014 Asian Games (Incheon); and, numerous other medals and distinguished positions in various International and national events. Another top shooter of the country Amanpreet Singh is also on the rolls of the university by joining its MBA Programme.
