Chandigarh, February 16, 2015: The Chamar Mahan Sabha has appealed to the Narendra Modi government to appoint the next Punjab Governor from the Scheduled Castes keeping in mind the large (almost 40 per cent) SC population in the state. The Punjab Governor retires on January 21.
“Even though the SC community constitutes a large chunk of the population the major political parties of Punjab ignore this section. So it would empower the SC community if for the first time the Governor is chosen from this section. We are confident that the Prime Minister, who is himself from the backward class, would give it a positive thought,” said Paramjit Singh Kainth, president of the Sabha.
“We are grateful that the Modi government has appointed Vijay Sampla, a Scheduled Caste leader from Punjab, as a minister for state. We also appeal to the chief minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal, to give his consent for an SC candidate this time,” said Kainth.
“From 1947 to 2015 there were 32 Governors, but not one has been from the SC community. We also appeal to the BJP president, Amit Shah, to set a new precedent by selecting a candidate from the SC community,” added Kainth.” Keeping in mind the bold decisions being taken by the BJP, the latest being taking into its fold the committed police officer Kiran Bedi, we are confident that the party would consider our appeal,” said Kainth.
