Ludhiana, April 26, 2015: World is suffering a great loss due to growing trend of disasters in terms of lives and property. The global efforts to manage disasters are not matched with the frequency and magnitude of disasters.
However, for the last 15 years or so some new philosophy on disaster management has emerged at global level which pleads for a proactive and preventive approach and integrates disaster management with on-going development activities that is sustainable development.
The Indian subcontinent is among the world’s most disaster prone areas. Almost 85% of India’s area is vulnerable to one or multiple hazard out of the 28 states and 7 union territories, 22 are disaster-prone.
Disaster Management is very important subject today.  Indian Institute of Architects, Ludhiana centre organized a seminar on this topic today at Ishmit Academy, Ludhiana.  About 200 architects, planners, builders, engineers and students of these professions attended the seminar from all over Punjab.  GK Singh Commissioner, MC, Ludhiana was the Chief Guest.  The function started with lighting of the ceremonial lamp.  
Harinder Boparai and Yogesh Singla Jt. Secy of IIALC welcomed all the Architects and Guests on behalf of Team IIALC.
Rajan Tangri- Coordinator and Balbir Bagga Vice Chairman of IIALC introduced the topic of Seminar.
Manmohan Khanna, Chairman, IIA Chandigarh-Punjab chapter shared his views on the topic. SD Singh, Vice Chairman appreciated the efforts of IIA Ludhiana Centre for creating awareness amongst the people regarding the same.  Sanjay Goel, Chairman of IIA Ludhiana Centre emphasized the need to get all buildings earth-quake resistant with the help of qualified architects and structural engineers.  He also appealed to state government to monitor the measures taken while construction is going on.  He cautioned that it should not lead to corruption or harassment to Public by Government officials.
Surinder Bahga, Chairman, IIA Publication Board, Mumbai gave a detailed presentation on this theme.  He informed that, almost 57% of the land is vulnerable to earthquake (high seismic zones lll-V), 68% to drought, 8% to cyclones and 12% to floods. India has also become much more vulnerable to tsunamis since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Ar. Bahga pointed out that a Seismic zone map of India, half of Punjab lies in Zone IV in which Ludhiana falls.  It is second riskiest zone.  Part of Punjab is in Zone III which is comparatively safer.  He has given examples of buildings in India and abroad where new technologies are used to make buildings earth-quake resistant.

Bimaldeep Singh and Harprit Kaur Dhillon explained past achievements of IIALC.
A completion of six issues of Journal of Indian Institute of Architects edited by Surinder Bahga was released on the occasion.
