Ludhiana, May 8, 2016: Taking serious note of death of three labourers in yarn factory situated at village Bajra at Rahon Road, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has demanded that the owners of the factory be charged with negligence because the owners had locked the workers from outside because of which they could not escape when the fire broke out. More over the factory had no safety measures. It is a well known fact that the labour laws are being fluted with impunity. The ESI scheme, Provident Fund and maintaining of roll call register are not implemented by majority of the industry. The officials concerned are totally apathetic to the condition of workers in these factories.
In a statement AITUC leaders O P Mehta, D P Maur, Kewal Singh Banwait, Gurnam Sidhu and Hosiery workers’ union leaders Lalit Kumar, Ram Pratap and Ramreet demanded that the family of the each worker be given Rs.20 Lakh as compensation.
They also demanded a judicial inquiry into whole incident and punishment be fixed against those found guilty. The state government should ensure that labour laws be implemented in letter and spirit, they said, adding it is the duty of the government so protect the lives of the workers and safe guard their interests.
