Activities held for Breast Cancer Awareness

Ludhiana, October 27, 2014: The month of ‘October’ is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the world. Breast cancer is the leading cancer among the females and there is steep rise in the incidence over last decade. This increase in incidence is because of the changes in lifestyle like sedentary lifestyle, increase intake of fats in diet, junk food, obesity, delay in first child birth, lack of exercise, early start of menstrual cycle in young girls, use of alcohol and smoking. Other important factor is family history of breast and ovarian cancer.
Dr Amit Dhiman (Head of Oncology Department), DMCH, Ludhiana is doing multiple awareness workshops for female staff of DMCH, this month. He is teaching importance of breast self examination, mammography, Pap smear for early detection of female cancers. Early detection of cancer can save the life of a female as cure rates are more than 90% in first stage and less than 10% in stage four. He emphasis the breast self examination from 20 years of age and screening mammography from 40 years of age. He also emphasised on exercise, active physical activities and healthy food habits.
Dr Dhiman has also delivered the awareness lectures in many schools, colleges and ladies clubs for female cancers.
