Chandigarh, October 3, 2019: The 7th IAPT National Student Symposium on Physics commenced today at Department of Physics, Panjab University which saw massive participation of about 130 students from all over India.
The Chairperson Prof.R.K. Puri’s address who introduced the audience with history of Department of Physics, P.U and the current research work being done at the department. Then Prof.Manjit Kaur, vice-president of IAPT North zone, outlined various activities of IAPT which is actively working to promote scientific temperament among young students through its various workshops and symposia.
The program was inaugurated by Prof. Satya Prakash, former president of Indian Association of Physics Teachers and emeritus fellow of Department of Physics, who inspired the young audience by laying emphasis on monumental contributions by Indian scientists in the field of Physics. By taking examples of many eminent Indian scientists like Aryabhata, H.J. Bhaba , S.N. Bose, Meghnad Saha , he encouraged the students to take up research fields with a vision of India leading in basic sciences.
The inaugural function ended with chief guest Prof. Baljinder Singh’s keynote address. Prof. Baljinder Singh is a renowned scientist who head Nuclear Medicine department at PGIMER. He presented current developments of Nuclear Medicine in India. He motivated the physics majoring students to take up the interdisciplinary field of Nuclear Medicine by talking about its prospects and challenges.
The second half of the day started with an interactive session by Prof. Arvind, a distinguished professor from IISER Mohali. He discussed Newton’s laws and universality of laws of physics and highlighted research prospects in classical physics. 20 poster presentations were made by students on many interesting topics.
Day 1 of 7th IAPT-NSSP concluded with a thought provoking talk on Space Sciences and Technology, delivered by Prof. Sandip Sahijpal of Dept. of Physics, P.U. Ever since Chandrayan-2, Indian horizon is widening on the space technology front. The end of first day was marked with a spirit of emerging scientific character and possibilities.
