Kila Raipur (Ludhiana), February 3, 2013: The Grand Finale of the 77th Kila Raipur Sports Festival witnessed amazing turnout with the stadium bursting at its seams. Such was the enthusiasm of the audience that each time they cheered the veterans running 100 meters, the bullock carts sprinting across the ground, kabaddi teams or the girls striving to win the 400 meters, the cheer could be heard to a distance from the stadium.

The grand finale of the bullock cart race saw the supporters crying themselves hoarse as the final group of four kicked up a lot of dust on a warm and sunny afternoon as they surged to the finish with the crowds making way for the thundering hooves. Sukh Nagra of Jodhaan won the completion along with the cash prize of 1 lakh. Naib Singh of Kalsiaan finished second, Raju Wariaa of Assi kalan finished third and Arshdeep Singh of Lohgarh finished fourth.

In what could be considered as a modern take on the bullock cart racing—the Tractor Racing—Mandeep of village Koom Kalaan out-sped Dilpreet of village Sahibana and Channi of village Gansalan to win the MRF Tractor Racing competition.

Another event, which was started to give the hard working Palledars (the laborers who work at grain markets and godowns) to show their amazing talent of loading and unloading trolleys, has become one of the main event of these games.

In the final of the New Holland Tractors Trolley Loading and Unloading competition, the team from F.C.I. Raikot, led by Gurdeep Singh, defeated the team from village Dhoorkot, led by Raju Dhoorkot, after a close contest.

The Grewal Sports Association also gives an opportunity to the differently abled athletes to shine. In the 100 meters race for the deaf and dumb (boys), Gurmukh Singh finished first, followed by Sukhpreet Singh and Satnam Singh. In the tricycle race for the differently abled, Ashok Kumar of Ludhiana rode to first place amidst deafening applause. Sukha Singh of Kila Raipur finished second and Kailla Singh finished third.

In hockey, Mukandpur defeated Hans Kalaan in a tie-breaking shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw, to lift the Bhagwant Memorial Gold Cup. The tight match finished at 9-8 after the tie-breaker went into sudden death.

70 years + athletes would probably put a lot of youngsters through tough times as they crossed the 100 meter line in around 15 seconds each. The equestrian show presented by the M.R.S.P.P.A. Phillaur was a picture of perfection, as the crowds applauded in awe.

The Nihang Singhs gave another scintillating demonstration of martial arts like breaking a coconut on the head by a blindfolded Nihang warrior. Maghar Singh, who had ridden on two horses yesterday, took his clan of young warriors on a round of the track to repeated applause from a big gathering which included the Finance Minister of Punjab Mr.Parminder Singh Dhindsa.

He also announced a grant of Rs 5 lakhs to the Grewal Sports Association for the up-gradation of the stadium. Punjab Cabinet Minister, Tourism and Culture, Sarwan Singh Phillaur said that the annual grant of rupees 25 lakh for this national festival by the Ministry of Toursim, India, will be presented to the association as soon as possible.

The following stars of yesteryears were honoured for their lifetime of achievement in the field of sports: Balbir Singh Grewal (hockey Olympian), Baldev Singh Shahabad (Dronacharya awarded hockey caoch), Jagninder Singh Jindu (former hockey player), Hargobind Sandhu (Dronacharya awarded athletics coach), Paramjit Singh (India record holder in 400 meters), and Maluk Singh (international show jumper).
