Ferozepur, November 7, 2016: In an initiative to combat against declining sex ratio in this border region and to support the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” programme, 500 newly born girls and their parents were honoured on the occasion of “Beti Janam Mahotsav” during a district level function organized at District Administrative Complex today. Addressing on this occasion, Kamal Sharma, former Punjab BJP Chief, said that the initiative taken by the district administration to honour the newly born girls and their parents is truly laudable. He said that all the Punjabis should give the due respect to the girl child in the society. He said that that those who kill girls even before their birth, not only should be legally punished but also be socially boycotted.
DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur said it is indeed a matter of great concern that recently Ferozepur was included amongst 100 districts where the sex ratio is very low during survey done by central government. He said low sex ratio is like a stigma for this border area, which should be removed and all of us should take pledge to uproot the curse of female feticide from this region. He said that people should come forward and become a part of this campaign so that the evil of female feticide could be removed enduringly.
He also mentioned that in the recent times the situation has improved. “Earlier the sex ratio in Ferozepur was 847/1000 but due to stringent effort of the district administration, the situation has improved and the sex ratio is now 890/1000. We need to keep working hard until it reaches 1000/1000” said DC Kharbanda.
The Deputy Commissioner also gave comprehensive details on the various schemes initiated by the state government for the girls.
On this occasion, the students from various educational organizations presented a colorful cultural programme.
Shruti Sharma, ADC, Ferozepur, Darshan Singh Mothanwala, SGPC member, Ashwani Grover, President, Municipal Council, Jugraj Singh Katora, Amrik Singh, DPRO, Ashok Behal, Secretary, Red Cross and others were present on this occasion.
