A 4.5 kg tumour successfully removed from an 87 year old man at Fortis Cancer Institute
Bangalore: The doctors at Fortis Cancer Institute, Bannerghatta Road, successfully performed a high risk surgery and removed a rare cancerous tumor weighing 4.5kg from an 87-year-old man from Chennai. The tumour had occupied the entire left abdomen and comprised 10% of the entire body weight of the patient. The team of doctors was led by Dr Sandeep Nayak, Director of Surgical Oncology, Robotics, and Laparoscopic surgery, Fortis Cancer Institute, Bannerghatta road. The patient had arrived with inability to eat as the tumor had occupied the entire abdomen for the past 2- 3 months which led to immense weakness. Post examination, it was diagnosed as Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLS) is a rare, biologically heterogeneous tumor that can arise from any fat-containing region of the body. This tumor presents considerable challenge due to its size and deep location, thus the treatment and management of this tumor becomes difficult. Dr Sandeep Nayak, Surgical Oncology, Robotics, and Laparoscopic surgery, Fortis Cancer Institute, Bannerghatta road, said, “It was a high risk surgery considering the age of the patient along with the size and location of the tumor. The patient was witnessing rapid weight loss as well as difficulty in walking. Post thorough examinations, we discovered that the entire left abdomen was occupied by a malignant tumor which had to be immediately removed. After thorough evaluation, we went ahead with the surgery and it was executed to perfection without any complications involved. The patient has been discharged and is recovering well.” Krishnan (name changed), son of the patient, said, “ We came to Fortis Cancer Institute, Bannerghatta road from Chennai for my father’s treatment after he was diagnosed with a tumor in his abdomen. We met Dr Sandeep Nayak here who examined him well and suggested him to undergo surgery, the entire procedure was carried out in a planned manner. The surgery went very well and I really appreciate the kind of treatment and service we have received at Fortis. One week after the surgery, he is recovering well and is ready to get back to Chennai”. Sarcomas are rare tumors that make up only 1 percent of all adult cancers. Although it can appear anywhere in the body, about 20% of the tumor develops in the back of the abdomen in a region called retroperitoneum.
