Chandigarh, August 28, 2015: The Sports Department, Punjab, would honour players of the state on 29th August on the occasion of National Sports Day. The functions to felicitate the players would be held in different cities across the state. During the functions, a total of 3293 players, with achievements from 2010-11 to 2014-15, would be given cash prizes worth Rs. 5.83 crores.

Divulging this, the Director, Sports Department Mr. Rahul Gupta said that felicitation functions would be held in Amritsar, Faridkot, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Patiala, Sangrur and Tarntaran. He said that the players belonging to Fatehgarh Sahib, S.A.S. Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Roopnagar would be felicitated on 31st August.

He further elaborated that the Deputy Chief Minister, Punjab, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal had honoured 306 players of the state, who had won medals at national and international level, with Rs. 9.30 crore worth prizes on 16th July this year.

He also said that for the year 2010-11, total 671 players were honoured with prizes worth Rs. 98.6 lakh, for the year 2011-12, total 495 players  were awarded prizes worth Rs.89.8 lakh, for the year 2012-13, total 719 players were honoured with prizes worth Rs. 1.05 crore, for the year 2013-14 and 2014-15, total 1394 players were honoured with prizes worth Rs. 2.42 crore and the 20 players bringing laurels in national games-2015 in Kerala were honoured with cash prize worth Rs. 40 lakh.

Disclosing more details, he said that in tomorrow’s function at Amritsar’s Guru Nanak stadium Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike would honour the players of Amritsar with cash prize, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Mantar Singh Brar would honour the players from Faridkot, Firozepur, Fazilka and Moga at Nehru Stadium Faridkot, Culture Minister S. Sohan Singh Thandal would honour the players from Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and Pathankot at Multipurpose stadium Hoshiarpur, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Pawan Kumar Tinu would honour the players from Jalandhar and Kapurthala at red cross bhawan Jalandhar, Irrigation Minister S. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon would honour the players from Ludhiana at pal auditorium Ludhiana, Rural Development and Panchayat Minister would honour the players from Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala and Sri Muktsar Sahib at hockey stadium Bathinda, Water Supply and Sanitation Minister S. Surjit Singh Rakhra would honour the players from Patial at polo ground Patiala, Finance Minister S. Parminder Singh Dhindsa would honour the players from Sangrur at war heroes stadium Sangrur and Mr. Virsa Singh Valtoha would honour the players from Tarntaran at Guru Arjan Dev Sports Stadium, Tarntaran.

He also disclosed that on 31st August Industry and Commerce Minister Mr. Madan Mohan Mittal would honour the players from S.A.S. Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Roopnagar and Fatehgarh Sahib at Dasmesh Martial Art and Sports Academy, Sri Anandpur Sahib. He further said that the Punjab Government is alos launching a sports league comprising Basketball, Football, Handball and Volleyball.
