258 RECOMMENDATIONS OF MEHTAB SINGH GILL COMMISSION IN FALSE CASES IMPLEMENTED BY PUNJAB GOVT SO FAR

COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SUBMITS 9TH INTERIM REPORT TO CAPT AMARINDER SINGH WITH ACTION RECOMMENDED IN 7 CASES

Chandigarh, August 23, 2018: Of the 344 complaints allowed so far by the Justice (Retd.) Mehtab Singh Gill Commission, investigating the false cases registered under the previous regime, action has so far been taken in 258 instances, bringing relief to the innocent victims implicated in these cases.

This was disclosed here by Justice (Retd.) Gill, who submitted his 9th interim report to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh here on Thursday.

Giving details of the action taken, Gill said FIRs had been filed in the courts in 148 cases, while compliance of orders had been reported in 38. In another 33 cases, proceedings had been initiated under section 182 IPC, and action had been taken against erring police officials in 10 cases. Compensation had so far been awarded in 29 cases, he told the Chief Minister, citing feedback received from the Nodal Officers.

Expressing satisfaction at the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations, Gill said justice was finally being delivered to the victims of the false cases, with the Chief Minister issuing strict directives to the police and other concerned departments to move expeditiously to take action as suggested by the Commission.

An official spokesperson said of the total 4351 complaints received, as on August 1, 2018, the Commission has disposed of 1539 complaints, of which 1195 have been dismissed.

Bathinda district had reported 47 cases of action taken by police for cancellation of FIRs, followed by 17 from Moga district, 13 from Ludhiana, 12 from Tarn Taran and 11 each from Amritsar and Ferozepur, according to data received from the various districts. Ludhiana had maximum number of four cases of action taken against errant police officials.

The 9th interim report dealt with 240 cases, of which seven were allowed by the Commission. The figures in the earlier reports stood at 122 out of 178 complaints allowed in 1st report (23.08.2017), 47 out of 106 in 2nd report (19.09.2017), 20 out of 101 in 3rd (23.10.2017), 30 out of 111 in 4th (30.11.2017), 35 out of 140 in 5th report (29.01.2018), 6 out of 19 in supplementary 5th interim report, 47 out of 240 in 6th report (02.04.2018), 21 out of 179 in 7th (15.05.2018) and 9 out of 225 in 8th interim report (10.07.2018).
