Ludhiana, September 23, 2015: Around 17.40 Lakh MT of paddy crop is expected to arrive in mandis of Ludhiana district this season and all arrangements regarding procurement have been completed in all 101 mandis of the district. As per instructions of the Punjab government, a pro-farmer decision has been taken under which farmers would be allowed to transport their paddy crop directly to the rice shellers, besides, strict action would be taken against the persons who harvest the paddy crop using combines at night time.
A high level meeting in this regard was held at Circuit House, here today, which was chaired by Principal Secretary Mr Vishwajeet Khanna, here today.
During the meeting, Mr Khanna stated that keeping in mind the interest of farmers, the Punjab government has taken an important decision. He said that the farmers would be able to transport their crop using tractor-trolleys and the state government would pay rent same as that of transportation by trucks to tractor-trolley owners. Besides this, farmers who harvest paddy with high moisture content and at night time, they would not be spared this time. He said if any farmer is caught, his combine was confiscated and an FIR would be registered against him.
Mr Khanna directed Chief Agriculture Officer, Ludhiana to carry out announcements in all villages of the district that no farmer should bring paddy with high moisture content to the mandis. He made it clear that this time, paddy with high moisture content would not be purchased this time and it would be returned, which would lead to big problem to the farmers. He also said that by today evening, all government agencies should depute their staff in all mandis of the district and inform him along with their mobile numbers. He also said that this time, the Mandi Inspectors would hold daily meetings with commission agents (arhtiyas) and related officers so that there is no shortage of bardana and that paddy is being packed in clean gunny bags.
Deputy Commissioner Mr Rajat Agarwal informed that around 17.40 lakh MT of paddy is expected to arrive in mandis of the Ludhiana district this time, which would be 1.30 lakh MT more than last year. He said that elaborate arrangements are being made for smooth procurement and all agencies have already been given 70 percent bardana, while they would get remaining stock of bardana in next few days.
Mr Agarwal informed that all agencies have been allotted mandis and the District Mandi Officer have been asked to get all mandis cleaned by September 25, 2015. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Mr Kuldeep Singh Vaid, Mr Ajay Sood and Mr Davinder Singh (all ADC), and senior officers of different government departments.
