147th birth anniversary of Bhai Vir Singh Ji celebrated at PU
Chandigarh, December 6, 2019: The Department of Guru Nanak Sikh studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated the 147th Birth Anniversary of Bhai Vir Singh, father (Pitama) of Modern Punjabi Literature on 5th December 2019.
The Research Scholars and Students of the department spoke on each aspects of literary contribution of Bhai Vir Singh as on his poetry , Prose, Fiction, Drama, Koshkari, interpretation etc. At the beginning of the programme a few poems of Bhai Vir Singh Ji were recited. The students also made discussion on the fiction creation of Bhai Vir Singh as on his Novels-Sundari, Vijay Singh, Satwant Kaur, Bhai Naudh Singh as historical romance.
Professor Jaspal Kaur Kaang Academic Incharge of the Department expressed her views about the valuable and rich literary contribution of Bhai Vir Singh and remembered him as a Great poet of Small poems.
Dr. Kaang also explained the aspect of KUDRAT in his poetry. The programme was graced by Manmohan Singh Daoun and research scholars of other department also attended it.
UIFT, PU HOSTED ITS FIRST ALUMNI MEET
Chandigarh, December 6, 2019: Amidst much excitement and cheer, the University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (U.I.F.T & V.D.), Panjab University, Chandigarh hosted its first alumni meet- Reconnect 2019, here today.
Students who passed out of the department in the last few years and are currently running their own entrepreneurial ventures participated with fervour. Soni Makkar, who owns the popular design label with her own name (flagship store in sector 8) was the Special Guest of Honour. Her recent venture Sohni Apparel Design is the online extension of her brand SOHNI. Addressing the alumni and current batch of students, she said, “I did not have a formal training in fashion which you all are fortunate to have. It all began with learning stitching in holidays during college days- just to acquire skill set. From crafting outfits for my family, then starting a small venture with three tailors and a master, eventually the brand became so big that it now inspires many.” Prof. Sween, the founder-coordinator of UIFT was a Guest of Honour at the occasion.
Manpreet Walia, an entrepreneur and a former student of UIFT who runs her own fashion boutique in Mohali, said, “I feel honoured to be back at my alma mater. I would love to offer internship to ongoing batches and whatever industrial training I can offer, I will be happy to provide.” There were special performances for the alumni by present students- Anjali and Pushpanjali of BSc 3 semester. UIFT students also gifted SWAGs to the alumni.
“This department has grown from 2 rooms and 9 students to now 200+ students from 2007 to 2019, it is overwhelming for us to see it growing unfathomably over the years,” added Dr. Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson, UIFT and Patron-in-Chief of ‘Reconnect’. Department students had displayed their creative work in the corridors for the alumni to see their work and give suggestions. The event was organized by the Patron of the Alumni Association- Reconnect- Dr. Rita Kant.
