Ferozepur, November 6, 2017: A farmer belonging to border Village Nihale Wala lost his crop besides his tractor was also damaged while he was crossing the river on a wooden “bera”. As per information available, the incident took place yesterday late evening, when farmer Sucha Singh was coming back from the fields situated across the fencing. His whole paddy crop along with the tractor which were loaded on the “bera”, were submerged. Though, the crop was somehow retrieved, the tractor was badly damaged.
As per the sources, this is second such incident within one month where a farmer had to bear the brunt of government’s apathy. It is pertinent to mention here that every day farmers have to cross the mighty Sutlej on these wooden “beras” which are often arranged “privately” by the farmers. Though, the leaders and the administration always make promise to provide more “bera” to these farmers but nothing moves beyond the lip service.
Swarn Singh, Joginder Singh and Kuldip Singh, farmers of this region said earlier the administration with the help of army and BSF personnel, used to build pontoon bridges but this year nothing has been done. “We are the victim of government’s neglected attitude and we cannot change our destiny”, said Swarn Singh.
Harjit Singh Sandhu, SDM, Ferozepur said that the district administration will hold a meeting with BSF officials tomorrow. “We will chalk out a plan to construct a pontoon bridge as early as possible in this region”, said Sandhu.
