Vision restored in the victim of pellet gun injury

Ludhiana, January 20, 2017: In a first of its kind surgery done in this part of India, a team of doctors from the Department of Ophthalmology of DMCH including Dr Sumeet Chopra (Professor of Ophthalmology) , Dr Sahil Goel ( Assistant Professor) and Dr Akashdeep (Resident, Eye Department) restored the vision of 26- years old patient Aqib from Srinagar, Kashmir. Patient Aqib got severe eye injury in a terrorist crossfire by gunshot on August 15th last year.
According to Dr Sumeet Chopra, patient was referred to DMCH with injury to Retina and Cornea of his left eye. He had consulted various eye surgeons before coming to DMCH. In a major operation, his injured detached Retina was repaired with complex Vitreoretinal surgery, endolaser and Silicone oil injection by Dr Sumeet Chopra and his team. As his Cornea had become opaque, a corneal transplant was done at the same time by Dr Sahil Goel. Also gunshot pellets were removed from the eye.
Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta congratulated the team of eye surgeons for performing this successful operation. In his message, Sh Prem Kumar Gupta said DMCH has the latest equipments in the Department of Ophthalmology for performing these intricate Vitreoretinal surgeries for penetrating eye trauma, diabetic Retinopathy and retinal detachment.
Dr GS Bajwa (Professor & Head of Ophthalmology) said that there are very few centers in India, which have the infrastructure to perform such kind of complex cases with latest techniques for cornea transplants, which are being routinely being done at DMCH.
