Mohali, July 25, 2017: The Punjab government today formally announced the launch of its flagship ‘Apni Gaddi Apna Rozgar’ scheme to generate thousands of economic opportunities in the state by flagging off over 100 uberMOTO bikes.

Bringing the urban mobility revolution through seamless and last mile connectivity to cities in Punjab, Uber, the ridesharing app that connects riders with drivers to provide convenient, reliable and affordable rides at the push of a button, today announced the launch of its bike-sharing product, uberMOTO, in Mohali, Ludhiana, Zirakpur and Kharar in the presence of Shri Manpreet Singh Badal, Minister for Finance, Planning & Employment Generation, Govt of Punjab.

Speaking at the flag-off, Shri Manpreet Singh Badal, Hon'ble Minister for Finance, Planning & Employment Generationsaid, “Bike-sharing services like uberMOTO will not onlycontribute greatly towards improving last-mile connectivity in Punjab and in cutting congestion but also be instrumental in creating thousands of entrepreneurship and economic opportunities for the youth in the state. The ‘Apni Gaddi Apna Rozgar’ scheme will be a game-changer for the youth of Punjab and will play a catalysing role in encouraging micro-entrepreneurship opportunities throughout the state, as promised in our poll manifesto.”

Re-affirming Uber India’s commitment to bring bikesharing to more and more cities in India, uberMOTO is now available in 9 cities - Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mohali (including Zirakpur and Kharar) and Ludhiana. UberMOTO is also celebrating its one year anniversary in India this July, completing over 2 million trips so far - a milestone for the company.

The flag-off follows a meeting held last week between Hon’ble Chief Minister, CaptAmarinder Singh and Shweta RajpalKohli, Head-Public Policy, Uber India and South Asia, where both discussed the launch of the bike taxis to boost employment in the state. uberMOTO will be one of the most affordable transportation options in these cities, with fares as low as Rs. 15.

Mr. Prabhjeet Singh, General Manager, Delhi NCR & North India, Uber, said “I am excited about the launch of uberMOTO in Punjab. It is a quick, easy and affordable way to get around cities. The Government of Punjab has once again shown its intent in embracing technology-enabled solutions to serve mobility needs and create economic opportunities. We aim to generate another 10,000 entrepreneurial opportunities in Punjab in the next one year and a total of 45,000 opportunities in the next five years. By recognising how we can transform the urban mobility landscape in our cities through progressive regulations, Punjab is leading the way in bringing the change that our cities need and providing riders an opportunity to travel smartly without worrying about issues like traffic, congestion and last mile connectivity."

uberMOTO gives riders an affordable and convenient motorcycle ride at the push of a button, through the Uber app. Riders receive driver and bike details just as they do for other Uber rides, as well as all standard safety features before, during and after the ride including GPS tracking, two-way feedback and the ability to share trip details with family and friends. uberMOTO has been successfully running in the Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia and Vietnam, and is especially well-suited for first mile/last mile connectivity, getting people from their homes or offices to metro stations and vice - versa.

Under the `Apni Gaddi, Apna Rozgar’ (AGAR) scheme the state government will be providing commercial two wheelers and four wheelers to unemployed youth at subsidised rates. With a minimal investment, the initiative aims to turn job seekers into job creators. AGAR will be creating thousands of entrepreneurship opportunities in the state.
