Chandigarh, January 21,  2015: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh in collaboration with Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) would host a performance by Kailashnath Devotional Group of Ravi Bhugobaun from Mauritus on January 23 in the Law Auditorium, PU.

Education Coordinator, Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies and PU Dean Students Welfare (Woman), Prof Nandita Singh informed that the  evening concert of devotional music would start at 6.30 PM sharp at the Main PU Law Auditorium. Entry is open for public.

The Kailashnath Devotional Group (KDG) working for about two decades and bhajan chanting is a challenging feat accomplished by this group. They sing Bhajans based on Indian classical ragas arranged in modern orchestration. These two concepts appear paradoxical to the orthodox listener but the group believes in the dynamic nature of music, where East can meet West anywhere and co-exist comfortably. The keyboard and the guitar are lavishly used alongside the Traditional Instruments such as the harmonium, the dholak, the tabla and the tanpura.

The group uses sargam or solfa chanting in its compositions.

Sargam requires a good mastery of notes and they use trained voices who have good practical knowledge of alankaars, swarvistaar, ragas and other gamakas used for the embellishment of music.

The KDG has performed in Reunion Island and UK. It is the first time that this group is venturing in the land considered to be the cradle of Sur and Taal i.e. India./ (SK Vyas/Jalandhar)
