Noida, June 27, 2017: Professor Tahir Mahmood, Chairman, Amity Institute of Advanced Legal Studies participated in the G20 Interfaith Conference at the University of Potsdam, Germany and also at World Congress of International and Regional Consortiums for Law and Religion Studies at the University of Bologna in Italy wherein he introduced the objectives of South Asia Consortium for Religion and Law Studies (SACRALS)’- a brain child institution established by Prof Mahmood recently.

Religion and Law Studies, encompassing theoretical and empirical studies and research on the relationship between state, law and religion in a human rights perspective, is a fast-growing academic discipline being pursued in many leading universities across the globe. The International Center for Religion and Law Studies is a pioneering institution in this regard, since the year 2000, has been pursuing this discipline through academic events organized all over the world and assisting in the development of other international and regional organizations as they explored law and religion issues through conferences, workshops and summer schools.

Prof Mahmood stressed that SACRALS will work on the pattern of similar organizations functioning in Europe, USA, Africa and Latin America and will operate in all South and Southeast Asian countries.

He shared that SACRALS has institutional affiliation from Amity University and logistically, a unit of the Amity Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. He further added that the institute will conduct academic programs in all the eight South Asian Nations including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan- besides collaborating and interacting with similar institutions & organizations operating at National, Regional and International levels in other parts of the world.

Thousands of eminent Scholars across the world who attended the programs in Germany and Italy welcomed the establishment of SACRALS.
