Panjab University VC constitutes enquiry Committee into fire incident

Chandigarh, May 16, 2017: The Vice Chancellor met the Chairpersons/Directors/Coordinators of all teaching departments, Deans of faculties and other Deans of PU here today and informed that a three member Enquiry Committee is being constituted by Prof.Arun K. Grover, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University to do the fact finding on the fire that engulfed rear portion of the first floor of Dewan Anand Kumar Hall, the Administrative building of PU, Chandigarh. The committee is headed by Hon’ble Mr.Justice J.S.Narang (Retd.), Pb.& Hry.High Court Chandigarh and Founder Director General (2007-2009), Chandigarh Judicial Academy. The other two members are Dr.R.S.Verma, former Director, Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh and Dr.Paramjeet Singh, Professor (Retd.), University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology, PU and former Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The committee will be assisted by three Technical Advisors of the University namely Ms. Sumit Kaur, former Chief Architect, UT, Chandigarh, Civil Engg. expert, Sh. Yogesh Gupta, Chief Engineer Punjab and Electrical Engg. expert, Sh. A.S. Gulati, former Engineer-in-Chief Punjab.

Dr. Vishal Sharma and Dr. Sweta, the faculty members of the Department of Forensic Sciences and Criminology, PU would be available for inputs and assistance of the committee. The committee is requested to complete its task in about three months period.

The expert team from CFSL, Chandigarh is already on the job for assessment of the cause of the fire. Panjab University also has approached IIT Roorkee for evaluation of fire damaged area. Prof. Umesh Sharma, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Roorkee alongwith his team shall be undertaking preliminary site visit to understand the condition of the principal load carrying elements of the building, configuration of the structure and to decide the next stage of detailed
investigations. Their first visit is scheduled on May 19, 2017.

The Vice Chancellor informed that alternative arrangements for the accounts branch and other affected sections of Admin Block have been made.

The Vice Chancellor stressed on the need of appointing common committee for rationalisation of fee structure across colleges in Punjab, UT and the departments at PU campus.
