Talwandi Sabo, February 14, 2017: The first ever 2-day All India Intervaristy Gatka Championship (Men & Women) held on the sports grounds of Guru Kashi University (GKU), Talwandi Sabo under the aegis of AIU, concluded successfully. There was a huge gathering of people on the campus from different universities and cities to watch this mega event.
The Chief Guest, Dr J.S.Dhaliwal, the GKU Chancellor, in his address, highlighted that Gatka is the blessings of the Guru and that GKU has led in reviving and popularizing this self-defence marshal art. He appreciated the GKU for its efforts in organizing the national gatka event and added that in the times to come all Private and Self-financed Educational Institutes/ Universities will be involved in the national gatka events.
In his remarks, the Managing Director, S. Sukhraj Singh Sidhu lauded the efforts of each and everyone, especially the College of Physical Education led by Dr Ravinder Summal and his dedicated team, in the GKU family to make the event a grand success.
Welcoming the Chief Guest and other dignitaries, Col Dr Bhupinder Singh Dhaliwal, the GKU Vice Chancellor said that at GKU an emphasis is given on extracurricular and sports activities over and above their academic pursuits, to carve out the balanced personality of students.
The GKU pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Jagpal Singh said that the event was the first of its kind in India which was successfully organized in conjunction with the celebrations of 350th Birth Anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He congratulated the participants and organizers for this achievement.
The GKU Registrar, Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, in his vote of thanks said that the immense response received for the participation by universities from far and near places, in this national event was due to the repute, facilities, organizational capacity and zeal of the GKU fraternity.
The gatka parties of over 15 universities from across the states participated in the championship, said, Dr Ravinder Summal, Director Sports. A German cyclist, Ms Caraman Mackley visited the GKU to watch gatka championship events. In her message she motivated the participants to conserve environment, be physically fit and stay away from drugs and addiction for leading a righteous life. She travelled various continents on her bicycle covering a distance of about 30,000 kilometers till date.

The results of various bouts are:
• The March Past by Jammu University was adjudged as the best, and was awarded trophy.
• The Overall Championship trophy was fetched by the Panjab University, Chandigarh, while the Punjabi University, Patiala was runners-up.
• Winner of the Overall trophy (Women) was lifted by Panjab University, Chandigarh, while the Delhi University girls were runners-up
• The Winner of the Overall trophy (men) was lifted by Panjab University, Chandigarh, while the Punjabi University, Patiala was runners-up.
• The Award of Best Gatka among boys as well as girls was given to Simranjit Singh and Amandeep Kaur, respectively, both from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
The winners were awarded medals and trophies by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries.
Earlier, the gatka demonstrations on the beat of heroism songs were given by boys and girls of various teams. The first, second and third positions in the girls category were won by Rupinder Kaur (Panjab University, Chandigarh), Sukhbir Kaur (GKU) and Gurpreet Kaur (GNDU). In the boys category, these positions were won respectively by Jai Singh (Panjab University, Chandigarh), Sukhjinder Singh (GKU) and Gurpreet Singh (Pbi Uni , Patiala).
The Championship event ended with lowering of GKU and AIU flags followed by the National Anthem.
