Ludhiana, November 22, 2015: The decision of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to hold its national executive meeting in Thailand has raised questions in the minds of several IMA members. Some members have demanded change of its venue to somewhere within India. In a communication to the President Dr Marthanda Pillai, Dr Arun Mitra, former Sr.Vice President of IMA Punjab and former president IMA Ludhiana and presently Chairman Ethical Committee of the Punjab Medical Council (PMC) and Dr G S Grewal who is a life member of the IMA and is presently President of the PMC have expressed dismay at the decision of the IMA head quarter to hold the upcoming meeting of the national executive committee of the IMA in Pattaya, Thailand. They said that this is not only strange but shocking as there does not seem to be any logic in holding meeting in Pattaya as this is neither an international meeting nor a pan Asia meet of the medical associations nor it is an inter affiliate meeting between IMA and Thailand Medical Association to discuss some important healthcare issues and concerns between the two countries.
They further said that IMA has a long and credible history of having been led by persons like Dr B C Roy and Dr A K N Sinha who worked hard to make the association responsive to the needs of the society. Therefore that tradition has to be maintained. The national executive is the highest body of the IMA  which should hold serious discussion on several problems concerning the medical profession in India and health care issues of our country.  For this there are ample number of places in the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Kachh to Kohima which have beautiful resorts in the mountains and beaches to give serene atmosphere for discussion. But we fail to understand why Pattaya has been chosen the doctors questioned? They further said that the medical profession is already in crisis and under scan by the people. Even eminent person like Harsh Mander had to write in this context in an English Daily on 20thNovember 2015. Organising  meeting in Thailand will further add to doubts in the minds of  people who may question on several grounds and raise aspersions. Holding meeting in Thailand will further put the organization in dock and lower its prestige and will justify the writings in the NCERT books, the IMA members opined. They have appealed to the National President to change the venue of the meeting and shift it to somewhere in India.
